The rivalry Between the Southern agricultural and Northern industrial states in America developed until slavery became an issue, leading to the civil war in 1861. The war commenced well for the South, with the army of the North beaten at Bull Run and Richmond in 1861, and 1862, and again in 1863 at Charlottesville, capturing over 100,000 Yankee guns.

The battle at Gettysburg the same year however, was a victory for the Northern Army of the Potomac, which saw a turning point in the war.

The resources of the Southern States at this time where virtually exhausted and with the emergence of new Union commanders like Ulysses S. Grant, a series of bloody battles took place with the Northern armies invading the Southern States. In 1865 the last Confederate troops capitulated at Appomattox.

War department records disclose that 359,528 Union soldiers died during the war - 249,458 of accident and disease. The Southern losses are estimated at 258,000 killed by wounds, illness and mishaps. The Civil War was possibly the most terrible war the American soldier has ever known.
